On Friday March 6th, the Manchester Branch once again held Women’s History Staff Dress Up Day. It was so popular last year with our customers and so much fun for staff that we brought this activity back by popular demand. This year’s characters included Queen Elizabeth (Mary Bridges), Norma Rae (Andrea Perillo), Rosie the Riveter (Barbara Moran), the Statue of Liberty (Terrie Richardson), Dolly Madison (Elaine Masur), and Jane Goodall (Joanne Halloran).
Residents enjoyed a technology fair that was held on March 14 at the Point Pleasant Borough Branch. Teen Volunteers worked one-on-one with many happy patrons as they learned about cell phones, digital cameras, downloading music, basic Word and Internet skills.

Ocean County Library will present its second annual “FlowerFest: How does your Garden Grow” Saturday April 18 at the Toms River branch.
This is the only gardening festival in Ocean County. It will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Special guest speakers include author and syndicated National Public Radio show host Mike McGrath. His show, “You Bet Your Garden” airs locally Saturday mornings at 11 a.m. on WHYY-FM (90.9) and reaches an average 50,000 listeners in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware area each week. It also airs on Sirius satellite radio’s NPR Talk channel (#135) Saturday and Sunday mornings.
He has also written several books about gardening.
Lee Schneller, whose book “The Everblooming Flower Garden: A Blueprint for Continuous Color,” was just published this month will speak about creating peaceful flower gardens.
The festival will also have demonstrations by the Master Gardeners of Ocean County, local florists who will show how to arrange flowers, and a photography seminar detailing how people can take better flower-themed photographs.
Stations will be set up around the library with videos showing garden themed presentations. There will also be two art shows with photographs by library staff and local artists.
Area nurseries will have displays in the lobby and vendors will be in Mancini Hall.
The library will host a floral arrangement competition with several categories.
There will be crafts and demonstrations specifically designed for children in the Discovery Room.
The festival is free and open to the public. More information can be found at the library’s Web site www.theoceancountylibrary.org .

The Plumsted branch celebrated its 10th anniversary today with cake, give-aways, prizes and games. The Friends group also put a PowerPoint program together with some old and recent photographs.

The Beachwood Branch had a “Seuss-tacular” celebration on Tuesday, March 10! The children were excited to sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss, though a little belated due to the previous week’s snowstorm. Everyone listened to librarian Nicole DeMatteo read the classic Seuss stories One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and The Lorax. Then the kids exercised their imaginations and created paper bag puppets that looked like the crazy creatures Dr. Seuss brought to life in his tales. It was a morning of fun and laughter that was enjoyed by all.
The Ocean County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women held their annual program in Mancini Hall Tuesday. More than 50 people attended the program.
Freeholder Gerry P. Little presented Commission Chairwoman April Yezzi and the committee a resolution from the Board of Chosen Freeholders proclaming March as Women’s History Month in Ocean County. He also thanked the women who attended the program for their active participation in working with the girls and young women.
The commission also recognized six young women for their artwork celebrating the commission’s theme for this year’s program: Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet.

Carol Zsiga presented a “Do You Know” presentation that outlined the challenges our environment faces and offered viewers an opportunity to correct those problems.
The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore also participated.

On Thursday, February 26, the Berkeley branch hosted a Guitar Hero III tournament for teens. The program was a huge success; 28 teens participated in the tournament, while their friends came along to encourage them!

The event was run by Mike Bobish. Special thanks go to Nicole DeMatteo and Nicki Politi, who generously volunteered their time to help with the program. They rock!

Winners received gift cards.
