UNIQUE ‘DIARIES OF ADELIA GOBEL’ LOCAL AUTHOR STUDY SIX-WEEK PROGRAM
HOSTED BY POINT PLEASANT BOROUGH LIBRARY

FEBRUARY 10, 2011, POINT PLEASANT, NEW JERSEY— As part of the celebration of Women’s History Month, the Ocean County Library Point Pleasant Borough Branch is hosting a unique six-week author study of local, Point Pleasant resident and colorful character, Adelia Gobel.
Through reading of her six diaries dating from 1901 to 1905, the author study group will take a 6-week time travel back to the turn of the century to explore Point Pleasant in a very unique way. Gobel, while employed as a maid in the home of the town’s Presbyterian minister, Spencer C. Dickson and his wife, Daisy, wrote the diaries which were later transcribed and bound into a book by the Ocean County Historical Society. The Diaries provide an account of the activities in the Dickson home and church; names of local businesses patronized; and insight into Gobel’s thoughts and feelings.
The group will begin meeting Tuesday March 22 at 1:30 p.m. in the Point Pleasant Borough Branch. The remaining Tuesday meetings will be March 29, April 5, April 12, April 26, and May 3; all at 1:30 p.m. Each week’s discussion will focus on a selected diary. This program is being sponsored by the Friends of the Point Pleasant Borough Branch. This program is free. However, registration is required. Those interested in joining the author study can contact the Point Pleasant Borough Branch at 732-295-1555 or by visiting the Ocean County Library website: http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org.
The program is held at the Ocean County Library Point Pleasant Borough branch located at 834 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant. For more information, please call the branch at 732-295-1555.

Truth WAlks in WAretown

American Historical Theatre actress, Dr. Daisy Century, evoked waves of strong and subtle emotions throughout our  audience members.  Her portrayal convinced us that we were in the actual presence of the great African American and women’s rights advocate, Sojourner Truth.  Her performance was awe inspiring as she recounted numerous, devastating obstacles and her resolve to overcome them.  It was truly a riveting performance!

Revolutionary War hero to be feted @ LBI & TR/to be joined by Just Us Books

Ocean County Library and the Toms River branch of the NAACP will present Noah Lewis and his portrayal of Edward “Ned” Hector, a black Revolutionary War soldier in two library locations.

This dramatization of Hector’s participation in the Battle of Brandywine (Pennsylvania) will appear at the Long Beach Island branch (217 S. Central Av, Surf City) Saturday Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.

It will also appear at the Toms River branch (101 Washington St.) Saturday Feb. 19 at 2 p.m.  The Toms River program will be followed by a sampling of soul food.

Ned Hector was a teamster and artilleryman with Colonel John Proctor’s 3rd Pennsylvania Artillery Regiment.

This unit was positioned near Chad’s Ford. Late in the afternoon of September 11th, 1777 the British and Hessians began to overrun the American positions on the east side of Brandywine Creek and the order was given to abandon the guns, wagons, and horses and “save yourself”.

Hector is reported to have said, “The enemy shall not have my team; I shall save my horses and myself.” He then grabbed up a stack of abandoned weapons, threw them into his wagon and escaped with his wagon-the only salvage from his company.

Hector was never granted a pension as were many Continental soldiers. Finally, years after his service, a “grateful” Pennsylvania Legislature granted him a donation of $40 for his heroics.

Hector lived in the Norristown area where he died in 1834 at the age of 90.

Wade and Cheryl Hudson, publishers of Just Us Books, will also be on hand at Toms River Feb. 19 to showcase children’s books they sell that reflect the diversity of Black history, heritage and experiences.

Just Us Books is one of the nation’s few Black-owned publishers and is the only one exclusively dedicated to producing Black children’s books.

They started their publishing house in 1988 and have earned top industry honors including the Coretta Scott King Honor Book Award for illustration in 2008.
