OCL enables teens to create!

Local teens will have several new opportunities to express their creative side at the Ocean County Library this winter through classes presented by Youth Stages.

Founded in 1996 by Jean Prall Rosolino, Youth Stages is an arts-in-education organization that connects professional artist-educators with libraries and other community organizations serving young people and their families.

It will offer Glee Club at the Brick branch, 301 Chambers Bridge Rd., Wednesday Jan. 5, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  The program is loosely based on the hit television show.  Teens will act, sing, create scenery and then join it all together with movement to create a fabulous glee-filled concert!

Teens will be encouraged to create believable characters and make up dialogue for scenes in “Whose Library is it Anyway?”  an improvisational acting take-off of a popular cable TV program.  Programs will take place on:

Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Little Egg Harbor branch, 290 Mathistown Rd.

Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lacey branch, 10 E. Lacey Rd.

Monday, Feb. 28, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Island Heights branch, 121 Central Av.

Wednesday, Mar. 23, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Toms River branch, 101 Washington St.

The Plumsted branch, 119 Evergreen Rd., will present “Murder on the Ship,” a night of creative drama themed games Monday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

All programs are free and open to the public.  Please contact the individual branches for more information.   Please register in-person or online at www.theoceancountylibrary.org.

Statue Dedicated in Honor of Former Island Height Librarian

Roberta Ellis, former librarian at the Island Heights Branch of the Ocean County Library, was honored today at a memorial held by the Friends of the Island Heights Library. A special section of our garden has been dedicated in her memory, featuring a beautiful statue.

Roberta was a resident of Island Heights for 62 years, during which time she was the first president of the PTA, a charter member of the Ocean County Artist Guild, a member of the Island Heights Cultural and Heritage Association, and a member and instructor with the First Aid Squad. As the Island Heights librarian for 20 years, Roberta was instrumental in creating the library we have in Island Heights today and its unique relationship with the grade school. We are the only public library in Ocean County that also serves as a school library.

Approximately 45 people came to the library for the ceremony, including the Island Heights School 6th grade class.   We are proud to honor her today and always.

Personal Empowerment through Numerology in Island Heights

Numerologist and Life Coach Michael John Fierro presented an introduction to the ancient science of numerology on Monday January 26. Numerology is a numerical analysis of a person’s name and birthdate, based on a system developed by Pythagoras over 2500 years ago. It uses the numbers 1-9 and the alphabet as we know it. Fierro says, “Through numerology, one can discern specific talents, abilities, personality traits, and trends in life. As a numerologist, my goal is to re-acquaint you, the individual with yourself, and empower you through acceptance and responsibility.” This successful program was helpful and entertaining for the approximately thirty adults who came to the library for this event.
