WHEN ARTWORK SPEAKS: EYEWITNESS IMAGES FROM THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

JACKSON, NJ- The Jackson Branch of the Ocean County Library invites you to learn more about the American Revolution through artwork, Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 6pm.

Historian Arthur Lefkowitz will present a color slide presentation of 18^th century artistry in the form of studio-executed history paintings, portraits, illustrations, and rapidly drawn field sketches.

This program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE WITH TCHIN

JACKSON – Children and teens! Come celebrate Native American Heritage Month by spending a delightful afternoon experiencing Native American culture with Tchin, a nationally know performance artist and educator of Indian arts, music, and culture. Through the art of oral tradition, comedy, and colorful magic, Tchin shares Indian stories that explain the creation of the world and how things came to be. In this energizing and captivating performance, Tchin plays and reveals the mysteries behind the rarely heard Native American courting flute. Tchin’s special stories have been passed down through generations and illuminate both young and mature minds. Come and enjoy a unique, entertaining, and powerful experience

Tchin is a multitalented Blackfoot/Narragansett artist and will be hosted by the Jackson Branch of Ocean County Library on Saturday, November 8, 2008. He will present two dynamic performances: At 1:00 pm for children in grades Kindergarten through 4^th grade, and at 2:00 pm for kids in grades 5 through 12.

NO FOXHOLES IN THE SKY: WHAT WAS IT LIKE BEING IN A WORLD WAR II U.S. HEAVY BOMBER?

JACKSON, NJ – The Jackson Branch of the Ocean County Library invites you to come watch the 1944 Documentary “Memphis Belle” and participate in an open dialogue discussion with some veterans who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 11:00am.

The documentary is 41 minutes long and films the famous crew of the B-17 “Memphis Belle” on its final and 25^th mission departing from England. Viewers will learn why the air war was vital in the defeat of Nazi Germany and will witness the many hazards an airman had to face as he battled the enemy five miles up in the sky.

PARANORMAL INVESTIGATING: Capturing Ghosts’ Pictures & Voices

JACKSON – What are Ghosts? How does one investigate paranormal phenomenon? See pictures of ghosts and hear ghost voices. Learn about key haunted sites in New Jersey. L’Aura L. Hladik, Founder and Director of the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society, has been ghost hunting since 1993. Her interest in the paranormal goes back to her own childhood experiences living in a haunted house. She has traveled to famous haunted sites such as The Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana and Beardsley Castle in New York. She has explored New Orleans, LA; Bachelor’s Grove & Resurrection Cemetery in Chicago, IL; and sites in Savannah, GA. Ms. Hladik has appeared on local television and radio shows such as CN8 and NJ 101.5 FM.

L’Aura, who recently published her book, “Ghost Hunting: New Jersey,” will appear at the Jackson Branch of Ocean County Library on Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 7:00 pm.

Self Defense for Women and Girls – Don’t Be a Target!

Jackson – On Saturday, September 13, 10:00am-12:00pm, Jackson Library is offering a program for girls 12 years and older who want to learn to protect themselves from street attacks and personal assaults using leverage techniques for self-defense. Daughter and mother pairs are welcome too. College-bound teen girls should take advantage of this opportunity to prepare for personal safety The two-hour class will be taught by renowned black belt instructor Walter Miller. Class size is limited.
