MASTER GARDENER SERIES: SELECTING AND CARING FOR SHRUBS

MANAHAWKIN – The Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present the program: Selecting and Caring for Shrubs, on Monday, April 23rd, at 2:30 p.m. at the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library, 129 N. Main St.

Master Gardener Ellen Silverman will talk about many types of shrubs and provide expert information on their care.

Shrubs make a definite statement in your landscape and can be a significant part of your landscape investment. Find out which ones are the best suited for Ocean County.

The Master Gardener team will be available to answer questions before and after the talk. Bring in your dying or diseased cuttings for diagnosis.

MAH JONGG

MANAHAWKIN – Play Mah Jongg at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on the following Fridays in April: the 13th, 20th, and 27th from 1:00-4:00 PM. Please bring the current year game card, and game sets. Mah Jongg originated in China and has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Many people are realizing the intellectual challenge it poses, and are drawn to the beauty and excitement of the game itself. Experience is helpful.

MEET POET RICHARD MORGAN, AUTHOR OF: I AM SEA GLASS

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting local poet Richard Morgan on Monday, April 16th, at 1:00 PM, who will talk about his book: I Am Sea Glass. He states that there is poetry in all of us, and he’ll show us ways in which we might tap into that resource. He will also take us on a journey of his favorite poems, and tell how he succeeded in becoming a published author. Mr. Morgan has been writing poetry for 50 years, and lives in the area where he is inspired by the wind and waves. His wife Pat painted the watercolor illustrations that are in his book.

FREE WELLNESS SCREENINGS – BLOOD PRESSURE, CHOLESTEROL, GLUCOSE, AND STROKE RISK ASSESSMENT

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is holding the monthly meeting of its Teen Advisory Board at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5th. Teen Advisory Board members are library volunteers who earn community service credit as they help out at the library and work to develop as community members. New members are always welcome.

Teen Writers’ Guild

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is holding the monthly meeting of its Teen Writers’ Guild at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28th. At the meetings, young writers are invited to discuss writing styles and techniques, share projects that they are working on, and participate in peer review and critique.

The Writers’ Guild will develop a newsletter to highlight the work of Stafford’s teen writers. Courtney, the teen librarian, will also make available resources about paths to publication.

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting the program Brain Games on Wednesday, March 7th from 1:00-2:30 PM. Keeping your mind active improves its performance. Your brain responds to intellectual stimulation by being fit and in good condition. People consistently express their fears about decreasing mental ability such as loss of memory, difficulty in concentrating, inability to adapt to new situations, etc. Just as you do physical exercises to keep your body in shape, doing mental exercises stimulates different parts of your brain and helps retain mental acuity. REVOLUTIONARY TEA: AN 18th CENTURY EXPERIENCE

In first-person living history style, Stacy Roth of “History on the Hoof” will reveal why tea was so important to people in the 18th century, touching on tea lore, and history. STRING OF PURLS – KNIT AND CROCHET GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will host the program – String of Purls – Knit/Crochet Group on Thursday, March 1st from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, and Saturday, March 17th from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Whether you’re just learning to knit, crochet, embroider, etc., already know how, or want to know what a “purl” is, join our group where experts will be available to answer your questions. Find that creative streak you know you have with this craft that has recently enjoyed an explosion of interest. For beginners, bring size 10 knitting needles and light-colored 4-ply worsted yarn. To crochet, bring the same type of yarn, and a size “I” crochet hook. If you’re more advanced, bring the project you’re working on. This is also an excellent way to exchange ideas.

MANAHAWKIN – Anna Salibello – a certified fitness instructor with the Arthritis Foundation – will be teaching a series of exercise classes designed especially for adults at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on three Fridays in February beginning at 9:15 AM: February, 3rd, 17th, and 24th. Maximize your body’s ability to strengthen and heal through non-aerobic exercise while sitting and standing. Increase muscular strength, flexibility, balance, range of motion, self-esteem, stamina and reduce the appearance of aging. These classes benefit anyone interested in staying fit, and will also benefit those with arthritis and osteoporosis.
