Teen Health & Wellness Database available free on-line

TOMS RIVER   The Ocean County Library has recently added a database specifically designed for the unique health concerns of teens to its roster of free products that are available on-line.

The “Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers” database was developed last year by Rosen Publishing, a leader in the educational publishing industry since it was founded in 1950.  The database is regularly updated.

It provides research support and self-help on such topics as relationships, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, diseases, life skills, work readiness, mental health, family life and more.

The information is presented using a sensitive, respectful and age-appropriate approach and gives insight into the teen experience.  That perspective is crucial for parents, teachers, friends and caregivers who are part of a teen’s live.

All content is reviewed by a team of leading professionals in medicine, mental health, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, guidance and career counseling.

“Teen Health & Wellness” maintains a list of national hotlines that is always available for anyone with an urgent need for advice or support.  It also offers a resource section that links the reader to Web sites, organizations and recommended reading that has been annotated and reviewed by Rosen Publishing.

The easy to use site is available from home and library computers.  To log onto the database from home a person will need to enter his or her library card number.  Those who access the database from a library computer can log onto the site without using their library card number.

The site offers interactive polls and quizzes.  It also provides first-person narratives from teens who have in some way experienced the issue being researched.

Ocean County Library welcomes summer teen volunteers

TOMS RIVERTeenagers, the library needs you! Ocean County Library has two fun summer volunteer programs just for you.

Ocean County Library is again offering its S.A.I.L. (Service and Achievement in the Library) program to teens who have completed the 7th grade. Teen volunteers help library staff during the busy summer months on projects include assisting with children’s programs, performing computer projects, and helping senior citizens with technology training. All participants in the S.A.I.L. program receive a special t-shirt.

Reading Buddies allows teens who have completed the 6th grade to work in a reading support program with younger children. During scheduled sessions teens will be paired up with a younger child to help sharpen the child’s reading skills by reading to each other.

The S.A.I.L. program began in 2000, and the Reading Buddies program in 2001. In that time, hundreds of teens have volunteered at the library, making a difference in their community and in the lives of young children through the programs.

At the end of the summer, special recognition programs are held for participants of both programs.

Interested teenagers can apply for both programs at their local branches. Additional information and applications can be found on the Ocean County Library’s website at www.theoceancountylibrary.org/Teens/teens.htm
