CHESS CLUB TO MEET AT THE MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY

MANCHESTER – Are you a chess-lover who wants to play in a relaxed, uncompetitive atmosphere? If so, then join the Chess Club at the Manchester Branch of the Ocean County Library! You will have the opportunity to develop your skills, meet people who share your love of chess, and teach the game to new players. Players of all levels are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chess boards.

The Chess Club meets every Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the Library’s Young Adult Area. Registration is not required. If you need additional information, please call Wendi at (732) 657-7600, ext. 4113. The Library is located at 21 Colonial Drive in Manchester Township.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO SHOW FILM,
“HOW I ENDED THIS SUMMER”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen, “How I Ended This Summer” on Wednesday, August 17, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular foreign drama on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

On a desolate island in the Arctic Circle, Sergi and Pavel work at a small meteorological station, taking readings from their radioactive surroundings. One day while the gruff Sergei is out, inexperienced Pavel receives terrible news for Sergei from Headquarters. Intimidated, Pavel cannot bring himself to disclose the information. When the truth is finally revealed, the consequences explode against a chilling backdrop of thick fog, sharp rocks, and the merciless Arctic Sea.

The dialogue is in Russian with English subtitles and is 130 minutes long. It is part of the library’s monthly Independent Film Series. Registration is not required. This program is open all ages although it is geared toward adults.

Manchester Branch Library’s Jewish Book and Film
Discussion Club to Hold Meeting

MANCHESTER, NJ – The Manchester Branch Library’s Shalom Book and Film Discussion Club that focuses on Jewish themed literature and movies, will meet on Friday, August 19 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig is the group leader. She is an English professor at Ocean County College and lecturer on all aspects of Yiddish culture throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties.

The subject of June’s discussion is a book by Naomi Ragen: The Tenth Song. Abigail Samuels, a successful Jewish American woman, is happily married to a well-known accountant and is planning her daughter’s wedding. When Abigail’s husband is arrested for allegedly transferring funds to terrorist organizations, their seemingly privileged and protected world falls apart.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY FRIENDS GROUP
TO SPONSOR JUNE ART EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION

MANCHESTER, NJ – On Saturday, June 4, The Friends of the Manchester Branch Library will host a reception to take place at the Manchester Branch Library starting at 2:00 pm to honor local photographer, Jeff Sayre whose photos will be on display in the library’s meeting room throughout the month of June. The public is invited to drop in to see his work, share light refreshments, and meet Mr. Sayres who will discuss his craft.

The reception is open to the adult public, free of charge. There is no advance registration.

Interested parties are also permitted to stop by to view this exhibit during the library’s regular business hours whenever the meeting room is available. To this end, calling the library beforehand at 732.657.7600 is recommended.

“MORNING GLORY”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen the film, “Morning Glory” on Wednesday, June 8, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular comedy on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

When hard-working TV producer Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) is fired from a local news program, her career begins to look as bleak as her love life. Stumbling into a job at “Daybreak” (the last-place national morning news show), she attempts to revitalize the show by bringing on legendary TV anchor Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford). Unfortunately, Pomeroy refuses to cover lighter news items like celebrity gossip and weather, let alone work with his new co-host, Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton). As Mike and Colleen clash, Becky’s blossoming love affair with fellow producer, Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson) begins to unravel. Soon Becky is struggling to save her relationship, her reputation, her job and the show itself.

This PG13-rated movie is part of the library’s Feature Film Series. It is 102 minutes long. Although there is no registration, early arrival is recommended.

Manchester Branch Library’s Jewish Book and Film

The subject of June’s discussion is a book by Lucette Matalon Lagnado: The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit: My Family’s Exodus from Old Cairo to the New World. The title refers to the author’s description of her journey from Cairo to Paris to New York during the years between World War II and Gamal Abdel Nasser’s rise to power in Egypt.

Manchester Branch Library to Host “Better Balance for Seniors” Workshop

MANCHESTER, NJ – Seniors, visit the Manchester Library on Tuesday, March 15 at 2:00 pm to learn how you can overcome balance problems associated with conditions such as arthritis and ear disease that affect many older people. Ron Hyland, the Fitness Director for Keswick Pines in Whiting will show you simple exercises and techniques that you can use both at home and when you’re out and about, to help you maintain and strengthen your equilibrium. Mr. Hyland claims that many people are able to rely less on canes and walkers because of these methods.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO SHOW,
“BAD DAY TO GO FISHING”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Library will screen, “Bad Day to Go Fishing” on Wednesday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular foreign film on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

Washed-up wrestling champion Jacob van Oppen and his conniving manager, Orsini, make a living staging fake wrestling matches in small South American Towns. Orsini never has trouble finding the right opponent to throw the fight but when they arrive in the village of Santa Maria where they promise $1000 to anyone who can stay in the ring with the champ for three minutes, they get more than they bargained for.

Manchester Branch Library’s Jewish Book and Film
Discussion Club to Hold Meeting

MANCHESTER, NJ – The Manchester Branch Library’s Shalom Book and Film Discussion Club that focuses on Jewish themed literature and movies, will meet on Friday, March 18 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig is the group leader. She is an English professor at Ocean County College and lecturer on all aspects of Yiddish culture throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties.

The subject of March’s discussion is a book by Sandy Tolan: The Lemon Tree: An Arab, A Jew and the Heart of the Middle East. The title refers to a tree in the backyard of a home in Ramla, Israel. The home is currently owned by Dalia, a Jewish woman whose family of Holocaust survivors emigrated from Bulgaria. But before Israel gained its independence in 1948, the house was owned by the Palestinian family of Bashir, who meets Dalia when he returns to see his family home after the Six-Day War of 1967. Tolan traces the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the parallel personal histories of Dalia and Bashir and their families—all refugees seeking a home. As the story progresses, Dalia struggles with her Israeli identity, and Bashir struggles with decades in Israeli prisons for suspected terrorist activities.
