WRITER’S CIRCLE TO HOLD MEETINGS
AT THE MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY

MANCHESTER –The Manchester Branch Library’s Writer’s Circle will be holding its semi-monthly meetings on Tuesdays, April 3 and 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. During our meetings, we critique each other’s works and discuss issues pertinent to authorship. Participants can receive answers to questions about the writing and publication processes. Learn the steps involved in copyrighting a written work and how to go about finding an agent. Find out how others cope with writer’s block and get feedback on your manuscript before sending it to a publisher.

This program is open to the adult public, free of charge. No need to register in advance.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO SHOW
“HUGO”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen the film, “Hugo” on Wednesday, April 4, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular family adventure on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

Set in 1930s Paris, Hugo (Asa Butterfield) is an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station. He fixes clocks and other gadgets as he learned to from his father (Jude Law) and uncle (Ben Kingsley). When he becomes wrapped up in finding the key to an automaton that doesn’t work, his only possession linking him to his father, Hugo finds a connection to his father through a cranky old train station employee (Sacha Baron Cohen).

This PG-rated movie is part of the library’s Feature Film Series. It is 126 minutes long. Although registration is not required, early arrival is recommended.

“TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen the film, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” on Wednesday, April 11, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular mystery/ thriller on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

Set during the Cold War in the early 1970s, British Intelligence veteran George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6 which is under the management of a new director and deputy director (Colin Firth).

This R-rated movie is part of the library’s Feature Film Series. It is 127 minutes long. Although registration is not required, early arrival is recommended.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is holding the monthly meeting of its Teen Advisory Board at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 5th. Teen Advisory Board members are library volunteers who earn community service credit as they help out at the library and work to develop as community members. New members are always welcome.

Teen Writers’ Guild

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is holding the monthly meeting of its Teen Writers’ Guild at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28th. At the meetings, young writers are invited to discuss writing styles and techniques, share projects that they are working on, and participate in peer review and critique.

The Writers’ Guild will develop a newsletter to highlight the work of Stafford’s teen writers. Courtney, the teen librarian, will also make available resources about paths to publication.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO PRESENT
CONCERT BY THE ANGELTONES

MANCHESTER, NJ – On Tuesday, March 20, the Angeltones will perform at the Manchester Branch Library from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. They will pay tribute to songs of legendary female doo-wop artists such as the Shirelles, Chiffons, Crystals, Marvelettes, Supremes, and Leslie Gore as part of the library’s celebration of Women’s History Month during March. The Angeltones are an all-female doo-wop group from NJ. They have appeared on the TV show, “Let the Good Times Roll” and have performed at the Philadelphia Doo-Wop Festival and with Vito Picone & the Elegants.

All ages are welcome. There is no registration for this free event

MAKING DOCTOR VISITS MORE EFFECTIVE

MANCHESTER, NJ – At the Manchester Branch Library on Tuesday, March 20 at 10:00 am, learn how to get the most out of your trip to the doctor. Find out the types of questions you should ask and what documents and information you need to bring with you. The presentation will be made by staff from Horizon Blue Cross of NJ.

This program is part of the library’s “Chapters of Health” series and is being offered as a partnership between Horizon and the library. It is open to the adult public, free of charge and it is not necessary to be a Horizon subscriber to attend. MANCHESTER – The Manchester Library will screen, “Queen of Hearts” on Wednesday, March 21, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular foreign film on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

Thirty-something Adele is devastated after a painful breakup. With no close friends or family, her distant cousin, Rachel, reluctantly takes her in. Rachel suggests that she sleep with other men to get over her heartbreak. Adele bounces from one lover to the next in search of her perfect companion but can’t escape the visage of her ex. Finally, she recognizes the man who may just hold the answer to her broken heart.

The dialogue is in French with English subtitles. It is part of the library’s monthly Independent Film Series and is 84 minutes long. Registration is not required. This program is open all ages although it is geared toward adults.

Featured selections include: “Spring” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Water Music Suite by Handel, and pieces by Schumann, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin.

POETRY CRAFT FOR TEENS SCHEDULED AT

MANCHESTER– Grades 7 through 12 make your own magnetic poetry set at the Manchester Branch Library on Monday, February 13 starting at 6:00 pm. “THE PIANO IN A FACTORY”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Library will screen, “The Piano in a Factory” on Wednesday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular foreign film on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

When Chen’s estranged wife reappears asking for a divorce and custody of their musician daughter, the girl proclaims she will live with whoever can provide her with a piano. When efforts to borrow money and even steal a piano fail, Chen decides to build a piano from scratch! He persuades a bunch of reluctant, but loyal, misfit friends to help him forge the instrument in a derelict factory from a heap of scrap steel. Though crude in design and tune, the factory piano awaits its first and final performance from his little girl.

MAH JONGG

MANAHAWKIN – Play Mah Jongg at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on the following Fridays in February: the 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th from 1:00-4:00 PM. Please bring the current year game card, and game sets. Mah Jongg originated in China and has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. MANAHAWKIN – Anna Salibello – a certified fitness instructor with the Arthritis Foundation – will be teaching a series of exercise classes designed especially for adults at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on three Fridays in February beginning at 9:15 AM: February, 3rd, 17th, and 24th. Maximize your body’s ability to strengthen and heal through non-aerobic exercise while sitting and standing. Increase muscular strength, flexibility, balance, range of motion, self-esteem, stamina and reduce the appearance of aging. These classes benefit anyone interested in staying fit, and will also benefit those with arthritis and osteoporosis.

MASTER GARDENER SERIES :
PRUNING – BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, NATURALLY

MANAHAWKIN – The Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present “Pruning – Best Management Practices, Naturally” at 2:30 at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on Monday, February 13th. Master Gardener Terry O’Leary will explain why pruning is important, feature hands-on demonstrations of what tools to use, and how to prune different types of trees and shrubs. During the remaining time, the Master Gardener team will address any questions you may have. They will be at the library from 1:30 – 4:30 PM. You may also bring in dying or diseased clippings for plant diagnosis and possible remedies.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

MANCHESTER, NJ – On Wednesday, February 1 at 11:30 am the Manchester Branch Library will host a performance in celebration of Black History Month. Students from the OCVTS Performing Arts Academy will honor the artistic contributions of African Americans through a program of acting, dance and music. Their presentation will include spiritual songs, poetry-inspired dances, and skits using puppetry. Light refreshments will be available.

She finds herself becoming entwined with the life of Strazynski’s young daughter, Sarah (Mélusine Mayance).

THE INTERVIEW THAT GETS THE JOB

MANAHAWKIN – Former Proctor & Gamble Human Resources Director John Chasmar will present the criteria you need during an interview to get that job on Monday, January 11th at 7:00 PM at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library. Mr. Chasmar was Director of Recruiting and Employee Development for 16,000 employees. Everyone has talents and abilities, but they rarely know how to communicate what they do well. All of your talents fall into two categories, and this program will help you understand them and how to use them – especially in your interview – to get what you want.

POETRY WITH GEMMA

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is hosting the program: Poetry with Gemma on Thursday, January 12th from 2:30 – 4:00 PM. Published author Gemma, who has written hundreds of poems covering all kinds of topics, will bring her expertise to other poetry enthusiasts. This program welcomes all poets who would like to share their poetry with others for valuable feedback, impressions, and commentary. Please bring in some copies of your work, which will be returned to you before you leave.

MOVIES AT THE LIBRARY

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will be showing the feature film The Help on Saturday, January 14th at 2:00 PM. An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960′s writes a book detailing the African-American maid’s point of view on the white families for which they work. Rated PG-13.
The family movie The Smurfs is scheduled for Saturday, January 28th at 2:00 PM. An evil wizard chases tiny blue Smurfs from their magical world to New York City. Rated PG.

CREATIVE WRITING GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library’s Creative Writing Group will meet on Wednesday, January 18th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. What is creative writing? It’s an expression of the writer’s thoughts and emotions, rather than merely conveying information. If you love to write in any form – fiction, screenplays, etc., – this is a chance to meet others with the same passion. Share ideas and information, with the option of bringing in a one-page sample of your work with some copies for others to read. The group is limited to five participants so register early.
