Lakewood hosts Fiesta!

So what do you do when you go to the library and a dance lesson breaks out?  You dance!

The Lakewood branch hosted a fiesta in its community room Saturday and Daniel & Carol Asin, members of the Latin American Dance Company in NYC, kicked it off with a salsa dance lesson.

Like a teen dance the boys and the girls were reluctant at first to go out to the dance floor, but a little prompting by Zarita got them out there.  “Expand your horizons,” she said, encouraging them.

It was fun to watch.  At first many of the dancers were shy and tentative but as Danny & Carol led them through more and more difficult steps, the dancers’ confidence grew and grew till by the end of the hour lesson they were spinning and salsa-ing away like professionals.

“I got it!” one cried out, and they would applaud each other with each new move mastered.

There were at up to 24 people on the dance floor at a time.

The lesson was followed up with a musical performance by Ray Rodriguez y Swing Sabroso, featuring their distinctive Salsa Dura style of music, and a sampling of Latino food.

This program sponsored in part by an OceanFirst Foudations Arts and Cultural Grant and the Ocean County Library Foundation.
