OCL partners with Kimball to prevent elder falls

Four branches of the Ocean County Library, along with The Center for Healthy Aging at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, will present “Stopping Accidental Falls in Elders.”

Seniors will learn about the risks associated with falling, how to prevent falls at home and what to do if a fall occurs.  The workshop will also offer tips about managing stairs, clearing floor space and smoothing throw rugs.

Because not all falls are caused by trouble balancing, workshop educators will also discuss how various medical conditions such as diabetes, cardiac problems, urinary issues and vision difficulties may lead to falls.

The workshop will include a balance machine to provide a falls screening assessment.

In addition, Kimball’s health coaches will be available to answer questions a person may have about his or her health.

The program is free and open to the public but registration is required. Visit the “Calendar of Events” on the library’s Web site www.theoceancountylibrary.org  or telephone the operator at (732) 349-6200 or (609) 971-0514.

The programs will be held at the following library branches:

Point Pleasant Borough, Tues.  April 10 at 11 a.m.

 Jackson, Wed.  May 16 at 2 p.m.

 Manchester, Tues. May 29 at 2 p.m.

 Stafford, Mon. June 4 at 2 p.m.
