Library Presents Ethiopian Folktale Puppet Show

The Catskill Puppet Theatre brings the rich cultural heritage of Ethiopian folklore to the Ocean County Library in two special performances on Monday, August 6.

The group will perform “The Lion’s Whiskers” at the Lakewood branch (301 Lexington Avenue) at 3 pm and the Manchester branch (21 Colonial Drive) at 6:30 pm.

“The Lion’s Whiskers” is a musical adaptation of a traditional Ethiopian folktale, combining a cast of human and animal characters. The story tells how the newly married Minya has to pluck the whiskers of a lion in order to win the heart of her new stepson. This tale of courage and bravery features puppets of all sizes and original music.

The Catskill Puppet Theatre has been touring North America since 1979, continuing the tradition of old traveling puppet troupes. They have performed at the Calgary, Winnipeg and Ottawa International Children’s Festivals, the New England Puppetry Theater Series and the New York State Museum.

These programs are free and open to the public. Registration is required; it can be done online at www.theoceancountylibrary.org or by contacting the hosting branch by telephone.

“The Lion’s Whiskers” is part of the Neighbors Connecting series of programs that explores the diverse and rich cultures of the world. This series of programs is funded by the OceanFirst Foundation Arts and Cultural Grant with additional funding from both the Ocean County Library Foundation and the Ocean County Library.
