Beachwood veteran to talk of his Afghanistan tour

TOMS RIVER –   Remember 2008?

Area sports fans divided by Philadelphia/New York loyalties each had bragging rights as the Giants pulled off one of the biggest sports upsets, defeating the previously unbeaten New England Patriots in Superbowl XLII; and the Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in five games to take the World Series crown.

Ocean County Library was recognized by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in a White House ceremony as one of the nation’s top-10 libraries.

And Beachwood resident USMC Cpl. John Scott Rafoss remembers where he was: a combat correspondent in Afghanistan.

Rafoss will present photographs of his time in Afghanistan and share his experiences of the country while covering the war during a special program at the Point Pleasant Borough library branch, 834 Beaver Dam Rd., Monday Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.

Armed with a pen, pad and a camera he photographed everything around him, including Helmand Province, Kabul, Mazari Sharif, Herat, Kandahar and the Panjier Valley.

“I will talk about the places I served,” he said, and “I will talk about the different foreign armies I embedded with: British, French, Macedonian, German, Italian, Spain, Swedish, Norwegian and others.”

He took part in the battle for Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand, when 300 Taliban insurgents tried to overrun it. He also participated in Operation Sond Chara (Red Dagger) that was fought by the British, Estonians and Danish where he was the only American on the ground.

He will also discuss his thoughts about Afghanistan’s future.

“As a civilian and college student, I have thought deeply about it every day for the past three years,” he said.

This program is free and open to the public.  Registration is required.  For more information or to register go to the Web site or telephone the operator at (732) 349-6200 or (609) 971-0514.
