TR to screen Smithsonian video on Emancipation Proclamation

The National Endowment for the Humanities hosted and recorded a panel of Civil War scholars at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History on Constitution Day, Sept. 17, 2012. Their discussion centered on the Emancipation Proclamation and its sesquicentennial anniversary.

Historians Eric Foner (Columbia University), Thavolia Glymph (Duke University), Gary Gallagher (University of Virginia) and Christy Coleman (American Civil War Center) recreated the national scene and the dilemmas that confronted Americans Sept. 22, 1862.

The panel was moderated by University of Richmond President Edward L. Ayers.

Ocean County Library will present the video recording Tuesday Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Toms River branch, 101 Washington St.

Register for this free screening by telephoning the library at (732) 349-6200 or (609) 971-0514, or by signing up on the library’s Web site
