More than 150 people attended the grand reopening of the Ocean County Library’s Upper Shores branch Saturday, Sept. 7th.

“Less than a year after Superstorm Sandy, all of our library branches are now open,” said Library Director Susan Quinn as she welcomed people to the reopening.  And while she acknowledged many people took part in rebuilding the branches, it was the support of Freeholder Jospeh H. Vicari that made much of it happen so quickly.

Freeholder Vicari, a strong supporter of the Ocean County Library and its mission of “Connecting People, Building Community” said his instructions were, “Just get it done.” He said he didn’t care what it took, he said, the library is vital to the community and the community needed it if things in Ocean County were to return to normal.

He presented a proclamation from the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognizing the library’s accomplishments.

“Thanks for getting it done so quickly,” said Lavallette Mayor Walter G. LaCicero. “It’s been nothing but a benefit to the community, bringing us together.”

“We are back,” said Mary Ann McKee, President of the Friends of the Upper Shores Library, “and we are back as one mind for a strong Ocean County Library.”

“You don’t realize how many friends you have until something like Hurricane Sandy strikes,” said Patricia A. Tumulty, executive director of the New Jersey Library Association and its Rebuilding New Jersey’s Libraries Fund.

“There was an outpouring of love. People called and wanted to help,” she said. “Then donations came in to the NJLA from all over the country. They wanted to connect, to help.”

She presented two checks from the fund to Library Director Quinn to be used for the Lavallette branch and the Bay Head Reading Center that returned to service several weeks earlier.

Following the ribbon cutting, people enjoyed refreshment and listened to music from the rock band Strictly 60s.
