Director Quinn, OCL recognized as OC Women’s Advocate of the Year

The Ocean County Advisory Commission on the Status of Women sponsored the Ocean County Women’s Advocate of the Year celebration Saturday Sept. 28 at the Holiday Inn, Route 37, Toms River.

The breakfast honored Ocean County Library and its director Susan Quinn.

Quinn, appointed Director of the Ocean County Library in August 2009, is dedicated to the library’s mission of “connecting people and building communities.”

She began her career at OCL’s Lakewood branch as a Children’s Librarian and quickly rose as her responsibilities in the library increased.

While at OCL she co-authored the peer-reviewed article “Library Leadership in Times of Crisis and Change,” that received the 2006 Award of Excellence from the editorial board of New Library World.

“We have strong women in Ocean County and I am so honored to be among them,” she said in her acceptance of the awards.

Ocean County Library, founded in 1925, serves the public through its 21 locations. Earlier this year is was named one of the top three North American libraries, receiving special mention in the Gale/Library Journal’s “Library of the Year” issue for its service philosophy and dedication to the community. This year it also received the New Jersey Library Association’s Trustee Award in recognition of the Ocean County Library Commission’s exceptional service to NJ libraries.

Freeholders Joseph H. Vicari and James F. Lacey presented Quinn with a resolution from the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders that acknowledged her accomplishments and contributions to county residents. Councilman Alfonso Manforti, Jr. also presented her with a resolution from the Toms River mayor and council.

The freeholders and councilman also presented resolutions recognizing the great work the library performs to Bonnie R. Peterson, Ocean County Library Commission Chairperson, and Commissioners Susan L. Hutler, James T. Mullins and James F. Malone.

Bahiyyah Abdullah and Jenny Cody presented awards from the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore and commissioners Christina Gaetano and Barbara Lehman presented the Women’s Advocate of the Year Award.

Other members of the Ocean County Advisor Commission on the Status of Women who officiated during the recognition celebration included Kelly Mitchell, Norvella Lightbody, Michele Lardieri, Carol Zsiga and Chairwoman Barbara Florimont.
