TOMS RIVER –  Despite some heavy rain on the evening of Dec. 6, it looked a lot like Christmas around the Ocean County Library and town hall courtyard where the Downtown Toms River and Jersey Central Power & Light annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony was held.

Due to the inclement weather, entertainment and refreshments were relocated from the courtyard at the township hall to the foyer of the Toms River Branch.

A tall stilt man singing “Dominic the Donkey” greeted wide-eyed children and adults alike as they took refuge from the elements to enjoy the festivities inside the library.

The Monsignor Donovan High School Chorus sang in character wearing costumes from Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol’’ in Mancini Hall.

Other entertainment included the Toms River Alumni Band, the Broadway Bound Dance Center, Bill & Casey and Ocean County Library’s own Karla Ivarson made sure that Mrs. Claus arrived to read “Twas the Night Before Christmas.’’

Santa arrived promptly at 8 p.m. and had his photo taken by a large number of children.

Residents enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies that were being sold as a fundraiser for the Toms River Fire Co. No. 1.
