Talent & speakers highight FilmFest 2011

More than 200 people enjoyed the work of local filmmakers at the fifth annual Ocean County Library Film Fest held at the Toms River branch April 15th and 16th.

Friday night honored the work of 10 Ocean County high schools. From nearly 100 entries, thirty-four exceptional high school films were screened.  Twelve received awards in categories ranging from best commercial to best visual effects.

Tony Mandille, a local prosthetic and makeup artist, gave an explosive demonstration of horror movie special effects to the audience. Young movie makers were inspired by the do-it-yourself style of Mandille’s techniques, which can easily be replicated for their next film project.

Tony Mandille’s work has been featured in films, television and theatre. In addition, he has held the title of makeup supervisor for Great Adventure’s famous Freight Fest since 1999.

Saturday’s event was an opportunity for local adult film makers to present their work to film enthusiasts. Twelve films were viewed and discussed in an open forum that was lead by each director. A highlight of the evening included a conversation between Glenn Kenny, chief film critic at MSN, and Jim Uhls, the screen writer of “Fight Club.”

The two speakers candidly discussed Jim Uhls’s works and his upcoming projects. Audience members then took part in a Q&A session with both guests.

The evening concluded with the presentation of awards for exceptional film making in the adult category.  Jim Uhls graciously provided a meet and greet and photo opportunity for attendees.

The Ocean County Library’s grassroots Film Festival grows each year more local film makers participate and submit their movies.

Ocean County Film Festival is sponsored through partnership of Ocean County Library, Kiwanis clubs of Ocean County and the Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
