OCL Friends to host Mahjong tournament

TOMS RIVER – The Friends of the Ocean County Library will host a Mahjong tournament fundraiser Wed. Sept. 10 in Ocean County Library’s Toms River branch, 101 Washington Street.

Registration for the event is $40 per player and is limited to the first 80 players who sign up. Payment is due by Aug. 29. Fliers with registration forms are available at all 21 Ocean County Library locations and on the library website http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org.

The tournament is an all-day event. Sign in for registered players is 8:30 a.m. and play begins promptly at 9:30 am. Included in the admission is a continental breakfast and luncheon.

Prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third place winners. All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Ocean County Library.

MOVIES AT THE LIBRARY

City kid Ren MacCormack moves to a small town where rock ‘n roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the residents. Rated PG-13.
The family movie The Muppets (2011) is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th at 2:00 PM. With the help of 3 fans, the Muppets must reunite to save their old theater from a greedy tycoon. Rated PG.

MEET POET RICHARD MORGAN, AUTHOR OF: I AM SEA GLASS

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting local poet Richard Morgan on Monday, April 16th, at 1:00 PM, who will talk about his book: I Am Sea Glass. He states that there is poetry in all of us, and he’ll show us ways in which we might tap into that resource. He will also take us on a journey of his favorite poems, and tell how he succeeded in becoming a published author. Mr. Morgan has been writing poetry for 50 years, and lives in the area where he is inspired by the wind and waves. His wife Pat painted the watercolor illustrations that are in his book.

FREE WELLNESS SCREENINGS – BLOOD PRESSURE, CHOLESTEROL, GLUCOSE, AND STROKE RISK ASSESSMENT

CREATIVE WRITING GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library’s Creative Writing Group will meet on Wednesday, April 18th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. What is creative writing? It’s an expression of the writer’s thoughts and emotions, rather than merely conveying information. If you love to write in any form – fiction, screenplays, etc., – this is a chance to meet others with the same passion. Share ideas and information, with the option of bringing in a one-page sample of your work with some copies for others to read. The group is limited to five participants so register early.

NATIVE PLANTS

MANAHAWKIN – The Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present Native Plants, on Monday, February 27th at 2:30 PM at the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library. Master Gardener Keavy Franzoni will talk about the benefits of using native plants and the many ways to incorporate them into your landscape. During the remaining time, the Master Gardener team will address any questions you may have. They will be at the library from 1:30 – 4:30 PM. You may also bring in dying or diseased clippings for plant diagnosis and possible remedies.

REVOLUTIONARY TEA: AN 18th CENTURY EXPERIENCE

MANAHAWKIN – The Friends of the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library are hosting the program “Revolutionary Tea: An 18th Century Experience,” on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at 10:30 AM. In first-person living history style, Stacy Roth of “History on the Hoof” will reveal why tea was so important to people in the 18th century, touching on tea lore, and history. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library and funded by the Horizons Speaker Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

STRING OF PURLS – KNIT AND CROCHET GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will host the program – String of Purls – Knit/Crochet Group on Thursday, March 1st from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, and Saturday, March 17th from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Whether you’re just learning to knit, crochet, embroider, etc., already know how, or want to know what a “purl” is, join our group where experts will be available to answer your questions. Find that creative streak you know you have with this craft that has recently enjoyed an explosion of interest. For beginners, bring size 10 knitting needles and light-colored 4-ply worsted yarn. To crochet, bring the same type of yarn, and a size “I” crochet hook. If you’re more advanced, bring the project you’re working on. This is also an excellent way to exchange ideas.

EXERCISE FOR ADULTS

MANAHAWKIN – Anna Salibello – a certified fitness instructor with the Arthritis Foundation – will be teaching a series of exercise classes designed especially for adults at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on three Fridays in February beginning at 9:15 AM: February, 3rd, 17th, and 24th. Maximize your body’s ability to strengthen and heal through non-aerobic exercise while sitting and standing. Increase muscular strength, flexibility, balance, range of motion, self-esteem, stamina and reduce the appearance of aging. These classes benefit anyone interested in staying fit, and will also benefit those with arthritis and osteoporosis.

PRUNING – BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES, NATURALLY

MANAHAWKIN – The Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present “Pruning – Best Management Practices, Naturally” at 2:30 at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on Monday, February 13th. Master Gardener Terry O’Leary will explain why pruning is important, feature hands-on demonstrations of what tools to use, and how to prune different types of trees and shrubs.
