Children spend their summer learning science at the library

Children joined the SAIL volunteers to experiment with “Great Websites for Kids” at the Toms River library branch Thursday August 7.

“Great Websites for Kids,” a compilation of educational sites, allows computer savvy children to play games related to various academic subjects. A committee from the Association of Library Services to Children evaluates various kid-friendly websites and adds them to “Great Websites for Kids.”

A librarian and volunteers at the Toms River branch worked with children on science-related games and a corresponding packet to complete during the program.

The computer programs, for children ages 9 to 12, will return next summer, but the website is an excellent resource for children while they are learning throughout the year.

The dates of future computer and children programs are provided on the Ocean County Library website under the “Events/ Calendar” tab.

Reading Buddies, SAIL vols = CONFIDENCE

The operative word for our WA Reading Buddies…encouragement!  From the onset of a few hesitant words to sentences that flowed freely, our young readers felt fostered throughout the program by our supportive SAIL volunteers.  Way to go future readers!

Lakewood TAB recruits new members

The Lakewood branch held a TAB Party on Thursday, September 9th to recruit the S.A.I.L. teens into joining TAB.  The response was great!  Five previous TAB members attended and 9 new members joined!  Erin prepared a spaghetti dinner, presented a TAB slideshow, and then had the teens decorate the Teen Zone windows with washable window markers.
