MAH JONGG

MANAHAWKIN – Play Mah Jongg at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library on the following Fridays in April: the 13th, 20th, and 27th from 1:00-4:00 PM. Please bring the current year game card, and game sets. Mah Jongg originated in China and has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Many people are realizing the intellectual challenge it poses, and are drawn to the beauty and excitement of the game itself. Experience is helpful.

MOVIES AT THE LIBRARY

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will be showing the feature film Footloose (2011) on Saturday, April 14th at 2:00 PM. City kid Ren MacCormack moves to a small town where rock ‘n roll and dancing have been banned, and his rebellious spirit shakes up the residents. Rated PG-13.
The family movie The Muppets (2011) is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th at 2:00 PM. With the help of 3 fans, the Muppets must reunite to save their old theater from a greedy tycoon. Rated PG.

MEET POET RICHARD MORGAN, AUTHOR OF: I AM SEA GLASS

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting local poet Richard Morgan on Monday, April 16th, at 1:00 PM, who will talk about his book: I Am Sea Glass. He states that there is poetry in all of us, and he’ll show us ways in which we might tap into that resource. He will also take us on a journey of his favorite poems, and tell how he succeeded in becoming a published author. Mr. Morgan has been writing poetry for 50 years, and lives in the area where he is inspired by the wind and waves. His wife Pat painted the watercolor illustrations that are in his book.

FREE WELLNESS SCREENINGS – BLOOD PRESSURE, CHOLESTEROL, GLUCOSE, AND STROKE RISK ASSESSMENT

MANAHAWKIN – Representatives of Meridian Health’s Cardiovascular Network and the Southern Ocean Medical Center will be at the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library on Tuesday, April 17th from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM to conduct free wellness screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and stroke risk assessment. Even if you’re not experiencing any prior symptoms, you can suddenly experience a heart attack or stroke due to high blood pressure. That’s why these screenings are so important. CREATIVE WRITING GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library’s Creative Writing Group will meet on Wednesday, April 18th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. What is creative writing? It’s an expression of the writer’s thoughts and emotions, rather than merely conveying information. If you love to write in any form – fiction, screenplays, etc., – this is a chance to meet others with the same passion. Share ideas and information, with the option of bringing in a one-page sample of your work with some copies for others to read. The group is limited to five participants so register early.

Teens are invited to discuss old favorites and new releases, share fan art, and learn about Japanese culture. This month, make a manga pin to decorate your backpack!

Teen Movie and Craft: Melted Crayon Art

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will hold a melted crayon art craft on Wednesday, April 11th, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Teens can create a trendy and colorful work of art by melting crayons onto a canvas. All materials will be provided. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for a potentially messy craft.

Teen Fiction Cafe

We will discuss books, movies, television shows, video games, and anything else that tells a story. Tea and hot chocolate will be served. The topic for April is journeys – what’s the most epic voyage ever written or filmed?

Spring Festival

MANAHAWKIN – The Teen Advisory Board of the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is holding a spring festival for children at 10 am on Saturday, April 14th. There will be a scavenger hunt, spring-time crafts, and snacks. The Teen Advisory Board is a group of teens who volunteer their time at the library.

SEASHORE AND BAY AREA PLANTINGS

MANAHAWKIN – The Master Gardeners of Ocean County will present “Seashore and Bay Area Plantings,” on Monday, March 26th at 2:30 PM at the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library. Master Gardener Keavy Franzoni will talk about the uniqueness of the shore area and how those qualities can be paired with plants that will enhance your property. Ms. Franzoni’s background reflects a practical approach to gardening at the shore. During the remaining time, the Master Gardener team will address any questions you may have and will be at the library from 1:30 – 4:30 PM. BRAIN GAMES

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting the program Brain Games on Wednesday, March 7th from 1:00-2:30 PM. Keeping your mind active improves its performance. Your brain responds to intellectual stimulation by being fit and in good condition. People consistently express their fears about decreasing mental ability such as loss of memory, difficulty in concentrating, inability to adapt to new situations, etc. Just as you do physical exercises to keep your body in shape, doing mental exercises stimulates different parts of your brain and helps retain mental acuity. We’ll provide the brain games and the fun!

REVOLUTIONARY TEA: AN 18th CENTURY EXPERIENCE

MANAHAWKIN – The Friends of the Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library are hosting the program “Revolutionary Tea: An 18th Century Experience,” on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at 10:30 AM. In first-person living history style, Stacy Roth of “History on the Hoof” will reveal why tea was so important to people in the 18th century, touching on tea lore, and history. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Stafford Branch of the Ocean County Library and funded by the Horizons Speaker Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

STRING OF PURLS – KNIT AND CROCHET GROUP

MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library will host the program – String of Purls – Knit/Crochet Group on Thursday, March 1st from 1:00 – 3:00 PM, and Saturday, March 17th from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Whether you’re just learning to knit, crochet, embroider, etc., already know how, or want to know what a “purl” is, join our group where experts will be available to answer your questions. Find that creative streak you know you have with this craft that has recently enjoyed an explosion of interest. For beginners, bring size 10 knitting needles and light-colored 4-ply worsted yarn. To crochet, bring the same type of yarn, and a size “I” crochet hook. If you’re more advanced, bring the project you’re working on. This is also an excellent way to exchange ideas.
