TOMS RIVER –  The work of local art teachers were showcased Feb. 6, in the second floor art gallery of the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library.

Kim Huler Defibaugh, who serves as kindergarten – 12th grade supervisor of visual and performing Arts for the Toms River School District said the annual program is very popular among her fellow art teachers.

“We have 25 art teachers whose work is on display here. It shows that we are not just teachers of art but we enjoy creating it too,’’ Defibaugh said.

Their work will remain on display throughout the month.

Defibaugh entered a piece of her own artwork made of wine cork called “Merlot.”

Elisa M. Waller, an art teacher at the South Toms River Elementary School described one of her two entries in this year’s show as therapeutic.

“I had a classroom and due to some changes I was put back to using a cart so I created “Art in a Cart.” Her work features a mural of a cart and materials that we use in an art class.

“It took me three or four nights as I would come home and add more items that I use during a lesson,’’ Waller said.

Waller is no stranger to the teacher art show.

“I’ve been in seven of the last programs and I’ve been teaching art for about 12 years now. I love doing this show,’’ she said.

Defibaugh said that next month the work of hundreds of the district’s students will grace the Toms River Library during a special reception at 6 p.m. March 6.
