OCL receives national grant

TOMS RIVER – The American Library Association Public Programs Office and the National Endowment for the Humanities announced that Ocean County Library will receive a $3,000 grant to host the program “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War.”

The program marks the sesquicentennial of the American Civil War and consists of a series of five discussions. Each session will focus on a different facet of the Civil War experience using one or more common texts as the foundation of discussion.

The program will be held at the Barnegat branch, 112 Burr St.  Dates for the discussions will be announced shortly.

The grant includes the presentation of 50 sets of three books: “March” by Geraldine Brooks; “Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam” by James McPherson and the newly released anthology “America’s War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on Their 150th Anniversary” edited by Edward L. Ayers.

Ayers is president of the University of Richmond, an historian of the American South, and a digital history pioneer.

The grant will also include training for Ocean County Library’s Givane Hayes, Principal Librarian and manager of the Barnegat branch, who will serve as the Project Director for the series. The training will prepare her to lead the discussions.
