Manchester branch hosts teen book discussion club

ESTER – The Manchester branch’s Teen Book Discussion Club focuses on literature and movies of interest to those of high school age. It will meet on Friday August 16 at 11 am.

The group will discuss Veronica Roth’s book “Divergent.” In this story, when teens reach the age of 16, they are forced to choose between five different groups, each with its own virtue (Amity, Dauntless, Candor, Erudite, or Abnegation.)  They will live in that group for the rest of their lives.

Beatrice Prior is not willing to make this decision. Instead, she makes a choice that upsets everything her world has been built on. While her society maintains that an individual can have only one of these five characteristics, and must live in accordance with it, Beatrice wants more.

Beatrice also holds a secret that she has been warned could mean her death if revealed, but which might save the people she loves. A movie based on this title is currently being filmed. The book is the first part of a trilogy by the same name.

This activity is open to young adults, ages 13 to 18, and is free of charge. However, space is limited so it is necessary to register in advance by calling (732) 657-7600 or by going online to http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org.

It is being held as part of the library’s teen summer reading program, “Beneath the Surface.” Copies of the book are available for pickup at the Manchester branch.

Author Stephanie Evanovich Visits the Ocean County Library Toms River Branch

TOMS RIVER—Author Stephanie Evanovich will discuss her new novel “Big Girl Panties” at the Ocean County Library Toms River branch (101 Washington Street) Thursday August 1 at 7 p.m.

Evanovich, is from Asbury Park, began writing fiction while waiting for her cues during countless community theater projects.

She has transitioned into full-time writing. Writing is in her family; her aunt is best-selling author Janet Evanovich.

In her new book “Big Girl Panties”, she introduces readers to Holly Brennan—a 32-year old grieving widow in need of a change. Having spent too much time mired in sadness and grief-eating, Holly heads out of town to settle her husband’s estate and try to move on. Enter Logan Montgomery—a personal trainer to the country’s most famous professional athletes who also happens to be sitting next to her on the flight home.

Holly’s mortified by the way she’s squeezed into the airplane seat, but as they chat, Logan quickly realizes she has a sharp wit and keen insight—a welcome change from the sexy but superficial women he usually dates. When he impulsively offers to train her at his private gym, Holly surprises even herself and agrees.

Holly discovers she’s a natural athlete, and as her fitness level increases, so does a new found confidence. When Logan finally introduces Holly to his best friends, baseball superstar Chase Walker and his wife Amanda (a feisty curvy woman herself), they instantly see what Logan doesn’t; Holly is knockout. As their smoldering attraction starts to spark in earnest, Holly and Logan will have to decide if their love is for real…or just about looks.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, contact the Ocean County Library by telephone at 732-349-6200 or online at www.theoceancountylibrary.org

Warm Hearted Country comes to OCL

TOMS RIVER – When was the last time you heard bongos played during a Country Music concert?

The group Warm Hearted Country uses them regularly and will bring them out when the group performs at three Ocean County Library branches this summer.

The six-person group, formed in 2003 by Laurie and Alice Dorisio, plays classic country music, Bluegrass, and Gospel.

Alice has been performing country music for about 50 years, mostly in family bands. Laurie’s love of country and bluegrass music goes back to her childhood when she began singing with her Mom at age 6.

The other members of the Warm Hearted Country band are Alice’s son Bruce Bunning on harmonica; Diane Bunning playing all the percussion with the exception of the snare drum and bongos; Dave Thomas on lead guitar and mandolin; and Alan Chambers on bass.

This fine group of talented musicians come with much experience and work wonderfully together in creating the signature and unique sound of Warm Hearted Country!

The group debuted at the Albert Music Hall in Waretown and has performed at many other venues, including the Pine Barrens Jamboree at Wells Mills Park, and the Pinelands Charge Bluegrass Gospel Festival at Batsto State Park. They have also showcased for the Acoustic Musicians Guild at the Ocean County Library.
