POAC offers safety strategies to protect children with autism

TOMS RIVER  –   Two branches of the Ocean County Library will host Gary Weitzen, Executive Director of Parents of Autistic Children.

Weitzen will present “Hidden Dangers and Keeping Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Safe in the Community, School and at Home.”

POAC’s program will educate parents, family members, and professionals who work with children and adults with autism and other special needs and disabilities about issues relating to safety, emergency preparedness, and crisis intervention.

The program will cover fire safety issues, sexuality and personal safety, school and transportation issues, resources for ongoing support and assistance, and physical modifications to the home and classroom.

It will also discuss Internet safety, bullying, and emergency and disaster preparedness.

The programs will be held at:

Toms River branch, 101 Washington St. (732) 349-6200 Mon. Oct. 7 @ 6:30 p.m.

Lacey branch, 10 E. Lacey Rd., Forked River (609) 693-8566 Wed. Oct 23 @ 6:30 p.m.

Professional development certificates can be provided. The Ocean County Library is a registered NJ Department of Education Professional Development Provider.

The program is funded through a community collaboration of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the OC Youth Services Commission, the OC Health Department, New Jersey Superior Court Ocean County Probation Juvenile Supervision, the Ocean County Library, Municipal Alliance Project and the NJ Governors Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.
